TRS Gold Medal The Gold Medal of the Texas Radiological Society is awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to radiology and radiologists in Texas by one of its members. It is intended as peer recognition of outstanding meritorious achievement and contributions that reflect credit upon radiology in Texas. It is not intended to recognize activities on the national level. The idea for this award was begun in 1968 when then TRS president Robert N. Cooley, Sr, MD was asked to prepare a set of working specifications for the qualifications of a recipient. Drs. Sehested and O'Bannon gave their support for the concept of a gold medal award. The Executive Committee gave its approval at a meeting in January 1969 and asked Drs. Allen, Moreton, and Yates to proceed with the concept. In 1969, President Hilburn D. Gilliam, MD reported on discussions with The Haltom Manufacturing Company of Fort Worth about the design and pricing of the medal. This resulted in approval of a design for a 1 1/4 inch gold medal. The tooling of the medal was at a cost of $175 and each 10K gold medal produced from this die would be $53.50. Authorization to proceed with the tooling came in a letter from President Gilliam on July 15, 1969. The tooling was reported completed by Haltom Manufacturing Company on October 1, 1969. The award is not obligatory each year. The recipient shall have been a member of the TRS for at least fifteen years and must be in good standing with the American College of Radiology. The Board of Trustees serves as the Gold Medal Committee. Nominations for the Medal should be submitted in writing to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at least four months prior to the annual meeting or any interim meeting. The Executive Committee also may nominate suitable candidates. Approval of the nominee shall require a two-thirds vote of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee. Approval of more than one candidate is allowed only in unusual circumstances and must be determined by the unanimous vote of the Executive Committee. A letter of October 26, 1970 from TRS President William H. Neil, Sr, MD to Roscoe P. O'Bannon, MD stated that he had been a unanimous choice to be the first recipient of the Gold Medal to be awarded to him at the banquet of the Texas Radiological Society Annual Meeting on January 29, 1971. Since then, a total of twenty-five medals have been awarded through the 2002-2003 meeting. There are fourteen living recipients, the latest being Dr. Yates. Nine of the previous recipients were able to attend and were recognized and honored at the annual banquet on April 10, 1999. Peter B. Riesz, MD TRS Gold Medal Recipients
